Faulty or clogged gutters can cause damage to your home
Keeping your gutters free and clear is a must to ensure a safe home. Clogged gutters can lead to possible damage to your roof, siding or foundation.
Nearing the end of fall, once the leaves have fallen is a great time to take care of them. Keeping up on this annually should keep them flowing. Some homes that have an excessive amount of falling debris could benefit by having it done more frequently.
Here are a few points to remember when taking this job on:
- Safety must come first so your PPE (personal protective equipment) should include a good sturdy ladder that can access the roof line where your gutters are located. Heavy rubber gloves, long sleeved top, protective footwear and protective eyewear.
- Gutter specific tools that help get the job done with ease and safely. A gutter scoop is a great tool when dealing with solid debris (shown in photo above). A pressure washer with gutter attachments make this a breeze but a regular garden hose can be used to get the debris flowing
- Have a place for the debris to go. Buckets work well but do get heavy quickly. Tarps can be laid out on the ground to contain the debris.
- Watch out for any damage that could have been caused over time to the gutter system and repair as neccesary. If gutters start to sag over time with the added weight of rain and snow this could lead to further damage.
